HYPOGLYCAEMIA: the most common complication of diabetes

WHAT IS HYPOGLYCAEMIA??

Hypoglycaemia means low blood glucose levels. It may range from a very mild lowering of glucose (60-70mg/dl) with minimal or no symptoms, to severe hypoglycaemia, with very low levels of glucose (<40mg/dl).

CAUSES

  • Excess insulin/medication
  • Missing or delaying meals
  • Unplanned or excessive exercise
  • Alcohol consumption                       

SYMPTOMS

  • Excess sweating
  • Shaking/Trembling
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Irritability
  • Palpitation
  • Drowsiness
  • Slurred speech

WHAT TO DO???????

RULE OF 15

CONSUME 15gm OF FAST ACTING CARBOHYDRATE

  • 3 tsp of glucose, sugar or honey
  • 1 fruit or ½ cup juice
  • ½ cup non diet soft drink
  • 3 toffee
  • 3 glucose biscuits
  • 1pc of bread

Wait for 15 min, check sugar ,if not better repeat the rule of 15 till blood glucose is≥100mg/dl

PREVENTION

  • Do not skip meals
  • Avoid prolonged or strenuous exercise than usual
  • Limit alcohol intake, and discuss with your Doctor or Educator
  • Adopt self monitoring of blood glucose.
  • Always carry 4-5 toffees/sugar sachet and identification card
